Reboot

19 April 2005

So, having taken 15 months to get this design up and running, I'm going to change it all as part of the CSS reboot on the 1st of May.

Well, not change it all.

Enhance. Add to. Improve upon. Modify. Tweak.

Given that a lot of this work is for you lot, my lovely readers, I thought I'd open up the opportunity for you to stick your oar in.

I want to know what you like about the design, and what you dislike, what you'd like to see more of (and less of). What I could do better.

I can't promise I'll do everything, but I can promise that I'll consider them all, and try and make them work.

The things I have in mind to add are (in no particular order):

- Linklog (probably included inline a la Kottke or Plasticbag)

- Live comment preview (a la Malarkey, Andy Budd, etc.)

- Style switching to increase the width of the page for larger screens, if I can't make the site properly liquid (and possibly, style switching for those who don't ever want to see the photos, or want to read on a mobile)

- visual tweaks (e.g., alternating background colours for comments, adding gravatar support, potentially using some kind of image replacement to give more of a styled look and feel, adding other little decorative touches)

- getting over my aversion to full RSS feeds, and providing full feeds (at least for words, not sure about pictures) for those who prefer to read that way

If you think I'd be wasting my time doing any of the above, let me know. Equally, if you wish I'd do something that I haven't already, and haven't mentioned, then speak up.

So, have at it.

Let fly the slings and arrows of outrageous feedback.

Please do keep the RSS and include the pictures! I read over a sixty web pages on a daily basis, and I would hate to loose any part of the little gem you are simply because you don't supply a full feed.

i would like to see some enourmous blinking text and some twiddling flashing rotating gif animations..
and maybe some waving flags and an enourmous java applet of an eternally burning flame? and some music kinda music that is probably from the soundtrack from bomberman on the nintendo (actually that would be kinda cool) maybe?

ok im sorry, its my birthday, its the afternoon, and im drinking the whisky i got this morning (Ardbeg Uigeadail, i can recommend it). I like your design just how it is, but im sure any changes you make will be positive.

Generally i'm not much in favour of style switchers but i can see the resoning behind your suggestion in this case.

Sounds all good to me! While you're at it though, could you redecorate my spare room (or more realistically, give me a hint as to how to do that style switching thing - I'm a bit of an amatuer and haven't got a clue how to do it).
Cheers!

I love linklogs. Also, if you could have the link to my site flashing and perhaps put (Five Stars!) next to it, that'd be neat.

I don't like Kottke's inline link log. Then it's not really a linklong, it's just a super-lame post.

Well if HE gets five stars I want mine in bold at the top of every post with SIX stars (gold ones that rotate - I have the animated GIF if you want it).

OR

I like the idea of being able to switch to a wider column but don't make it TOO wide.. or someone will just comment about access-/read- ability issues.. ohh hang on, that's normally you!!

ohh and have to admit that the "inline" linklog is just a post full of links.. I've never understood the distinction (I realise the TECHNICAL distinction but readers don't CARE about technicalities!).

Ohh and definitely some more photos of your gorgeous self, natch.

Just keep posting those thought provoking words and stylish photo's. That'll do me, thanks.

How do you get your photos to auto-rotate like that? I want that on my site.

I never really liked inline linklogs either. I did like how plasticbag.org used to have his linklog both inline and in a sidebar.
